The article proposes to examine the specificities of the comercial exchanges between Brazil and the United States on the basis of the recent analyses of theory of international trade. The studies show that commercial relations between less technologically advanced countries and those inserted on a knowledgebased economy, do not restrict to caracterize those exchanges in terms of intersectorial trade (specialization by countries) and intrasectorial trade. It is essencial to distinguish between vertical differentiation (on quality basis) and horizontal differentiation (on variety basis) among products that belong to the same sector which are objects of a cross trade. The bilateral flow of trade between Brazil and the United States predominantly favours intersectorial trade, as well as intrasectorial trade based on vertical differentiation.
