This paper examines three approaches to CSR through a value chains perspective: fair trade, ethical trade and collective agreements. It uses case studies from Ghana, the Dominican Republic, Kenya, South Africa, Zambia, the US and Latin America. The paper identifies key trends and characteristics of contemporary agri-food systems, focusing on global fresh fruit and vegetable (FFV) value chains and builds a typology of the main employment and social issues involved in the production and processing of fresh and vegetables, and shows how these are linked to the overall structure and operation of FFV value chains.
